Tim Ivison and Julia Tcharfas are a collaborative practice that develops bodies of work based on series of sculptural installations. They consider new forms of engagement with the city, performance documentation, text, and print projects. Although the work is grounded in a sculptural practice, it is driven by experimentation with object relations and historical referents following the logic of this content. Ivison and Tcharfas bring together backgrounds in studio art and cultural research, providing a space to develop an aesthetic and spatial language around their research interests – ranging from utopian social theory, architectural history, to urban nature experiments. The interdisciplinary approach includes photography, collage, found objects, and sculpture; it often involves material local to the installation site and context. The works are often historically referential and formally un-monumental, appearing as installations of work in progress – seeking a balance between the incidental and the intentional, the natural and the artificial, daily experience and the surreal.
