Jani Ruscica works primarily with film, photography and sculpture. In the film works, temporal layers and different periods reflect on the contemporary zeitgeist, creating new meaning relationships. Taking a collaborative approach to filmmaking, Ruscica has worked with scientists, theatre makers and street performers. The works often begin with the establishing of a particular situation or narrative starting point – which is then developed through a shared creative process. Ruscica is interested in how one defines one’s location, one’s placement in the world, and how this definition changes – continuously if necessary – according to personal, cultural or scientific factors. Fundamentally, the artist is concerned with portrayals of place and the different media used to create imagery and historical layers – exploring themes of architecture, cityscape, cultural/urban interaction, landscape, media, personal narrative and a study of time/space.
